The Mug Masterclass: Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Ask (But Didn’t)

At LongStudioDesign.com, we know that a mug is rarely just a mug. It’s a morning ritual, a desk companion, and sometimes, a piece of art. But between bone china, stoneware, and the mystery of the "microwave-safe" label, there’s a lot of confusion out there.
We’ve rounded up the most common questions we get from our UK customers to help you care for your collection.

  1. The Material Mystery: What’s the difference?
The most common question we hear is: "What actually is bone china?" Think of Fine Bone China as the "gold standard." It’s made from a blend of clay and bone ash, which allows it to be incredibly thin and translucent while remaining surprisingly strong. If you hold a genuine bone china mug up to the light, you’ll likely see the shadow of your fingers through the side! Ceramic mugs, however, do have their place providing a sturdy and more affordable mug.
Why choose Bone China Mugs over standard ceramic?
        •    Heat Retention: It’s one of the best materials for keeping tea and coffee hot.
        •    The "Lip" Factor: Because it can be crafted so thinly, it offers a much more elegant drinking experience than a chunky ceramic mug.
        •    Stain Resistance: High-quality glazes on bone china don't stain as easily as cheaper pottery.

2. Can I Put It in the Microwave? (And Other Safety Hits)
We’ve all been there: your tea has gone cold and you need a quick zap.
    •    The Microwave Rule: Most of our ceramic and bone china mugs are perfectly microwave-safe. However, if your mug has any gold or silver "metallic" luster or hand-painted foil, keep it out of the microwave. It will spark!
    •    The Oven & Air Fryer: We get asked this a lot, but we don't recommend putting your mugs in the oven or air fryer. The intense, direct heat can cause "thermal shock," leading to cracks.
    •    Is it safe if the glaze is cracked? If you see "crazing" (tiny spiderweb cracks in the shiny coating), it’s best to retire that mug to the potting shed. Bacteria can hide in those cracks, and the structure is no longer as strong.

3. Dishwasher vs. Hand-Washing
Can you put them in the dishwasher? Yes. Most modern bone china and ceramic mugs are dishwasher safe, but if you want to keep the designs looking vibrant for decades, we suggest using a gentle cycle.
    •    Top Tip: If you're using the dishwasher, try to keep your mugs on the top rack to avoid them rattling against heavier plates or pots.
    •    The Stain Solution: If you do get a stubborn tea ring, don't reach for the bleach. A simple paste of baking soda and water rubbed into the stain will lift it right off without scratching the surface.

4. The "Eco" Question: Are Mugs Recyclable?
This is a tricky one for our UK shoppers. Can mugs go in the recycling bin? Unfortunately, no.
Even though they feel like glass, ceramics and bone china have a much higher melting point. If they end up in the glass recycling bin, they can actually ruin the entire batch of recycled glass.
    •    The Better Way: If your mug is still in one piece, donate it! If it's broken, it generally has to go in the general waste, or better yet, crush the pieces and use them at the bottom of plant pots for drainage.

5. Buying the Perfect Gift
Whether you are looking for mugs for him, a thoughtful gift for a friend, or a personalised mug with a name or initial, size matters!
    •    Standard (250ml - 300ml): Perfect for a traditional English breakfast tea or a flat white.
    •    Large (400ml+): The go-to for soup, hot chocolate with all the toppings, or those Monday mornings when one coffee just isn't enough.
At LongStudioDesign.com, we specialise in artistic and unique designs - from delicate animal illustrations to bold, contemporary patterns. We believe every cup of tea or coffee should feel like an occasion.
